AS the cost-of-living crisis continues to bite, ForHousing has offered Ellesmere Port and Neston residents some top money-saving tips.
The End Fuel Poverty Coalition estimates that 5.3 million households in England will suffer fuel poverty this winter, even after the new price guarantee.
ForHousing manages 5,500 homes on behalf of Cheshire West and Chester Council.
Speaking to the Globe, Craig Ellis, Welfare Reform Manager at ForHousing said: “If you’re struggling to make ends meet, then make sure you’re getting all the income that you’re entitled to.
“Similarly, if you are having difficulty with debt, it’s important to get help.
“If you’re a tenant living in a home managed by ForHousing, get in touch with us and our income team will be able to help review your benefits.
“They can also provide budgeting advice and support to get on top of debt.
“If you’re a tenant of another landlord or living in your own home, it’s worth contacting your landlord or Citizens Advice.
“We know energy bills are a real concern right now as prices rocket.”
Craig has also provided the best ways to keep your energy bills down:
- Have a five-minute shower instead of a bath
- Turn off your lights when you’re not in the room
- Only boil the water you need for the drink you’re making
- Stop draughts – for example, by buying draught excluders
- Lower your heating by one degree
- Don’t leave electronics on standby – switch them off at the wall
- Avoid using the tumble dryer
Craig added: “It’s so important to keep yourself warm and well this winter. If you live in a home managed by ForHousing, our energy services team can give advice on the best way to do this.
“While switching energy providers isn’t recommended right now, we can help you access government support.”
In 2020, ForHousing fitted solar panels to nearly 200 council-owned homes to help bring down the cost of electricity bills.
They plan to fit more over the coming years and continue to invest in measures like solid wall insulation to keep homes warmer.
Craig said: “We know some people in the community may feel like they have to choose between heating and eating this winter. No one should go hungry.
“If you live in a home managed by ForHousing and are struggling to pay for food, then please tell us – we can provide food bank vouchers and point you in the direction of the nearest food bank.”
If you’re a tenant of another landlord or living in your own home, there’s a map and list of community food providers in Cheshire West and Chester here.
